How I feel about the protein and smoking thing……
ANIMAL PROTEIN WILL KILL YOU FASTER THAN BLAST,
HEROIN AND PORT WHEN YOUR 90!
Look what i did there … I wanted your attention so I wrote a
SHOCKING headline….
It was all over the news last week, if you didn’t see it there was
a piece that suggested that high protein diets were as bad for you
as smoking.
People were asking me for my opinion on it…..
Yep the article opens up with…..’Eating too much protein could be
as dangerous as smoking for middle aged people, a scientific study
has found’.
If you check out the majority of the internet write ups about
ANIMAL PROTEIN CAUSING CANCER the majority will have advertisements
selling some kind of dietary shake or supplement.
Let’s not forget that I could do a study to look into whether those
who died from cancer consumed water or not…….and 100% would
have……does that mean there is a causal link!?!!!!
So why is this a problem?
When you read the study about protein being as carcinogenic as your
20 a day habit you would see that 50% of the ‘diet’ the control
group (the group who the assess the results against to get the
figure that your e.g. 10 times more likely to BUILD cancer) ate is
around 50% sugar/ carbohydrate based, which was probably not
controlled in terms of whether or not it was from wheat/ vegetables
or skittles!
If we recall the outrage at the start of Jan about ‘sugar’ being
the nutrient taken out into the mid day sun and shot you’ll recall
equal amount of media attention…. Have we forgotten about this
already?
What the press like to do is to DIVE upon a study like this that
CAUSES OUTRAGE and gets people talking, perhaps visiting more
websites/ BUYING more media!!
In my opinion its what leads to the utter confusion that most
people have about what is good and what is bad. If they perhaps
gave some value or even decent post article advice it wouldn’t be
so reckless.
The message I personally share, like many coaches who know their
steak from burgers, is that the devil is in the dose. So rotating
animal proteins, dairy, fish and plant based sources is probably a
decent idea.
Heres an idea of how to rotate your breakfast proteins: (or how I
do it anyway)
E.g Mon- Egg/ omelette with veggies/berries ,
Tue- Vegan blend protein shake (berries, coconut milk, almond
butter, flaxseed oil, water, cocoa powder)
Wed-salmon, asparagus/Kale and some chopped apple or some
strawberries (summer time) or frozen berries (winter).
Thurs- 4 poached eggs with some spinach and chopped peppers
Fri- Steak, eggs, nuts, berries and even some sautéed potatoes!
Sat- Salmon with some seeds, lemon or lime juice, rocket,
balsamic…
You see WOULDNT it be lovely if these articles written in the press
had some HELPFUL things for people at the end…
Instead of scaring the living daylights out of people… Then
leaving them high and dry and PARALYSED so they scoff down a KFC
thinking fuck it I’m fat, I smoke, and Nothing is good for me… So
i may as well smoke me 20 a day…
‘Either way we’re all going to die’…
Yes. We are all going to die! True… But I think like my meat I
believe there is a lot to be said for quality in both!
