No Liver- No Health | A True Story In Front Of My Eyes

Hey

Just headed down to the beach for a change of scenery to get some important projects done.

To kick start it I have popped this together for you.

There is no ONE organ that you can single out as the most important for health, for they all form an integrated part the very powerful unit that is our body.

But, I thought I would start with the Liver. Our liver is our one of our major organs of elimination. It is an extremely hardworking organ in that it everything that goes into our mouths must be processed by our liver.
The liver has many functions including the breaking down of toxic chemicals – alcohol and pesticides as well as the storage of many compounds (Glycogen, vitamin D, A and many B vitamins).

It is also responsible for producing sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) which are like magnets in our body , they go around mopping up excess oestrogens, normally caused by excessive plasticisers in our contemporary living.

The liver also plays a role in blood sugar regulation. It has the ability to convert stored Glycogen (obtained from the intake of Carbohydrate) into Glucose for release into the blood to help regulate blood sugar levels if it is needed.

The liver also plays a role in manufacturing of proteins, which contribute to blood clotting and libido, transportation of substances around our body.

Not forgetting the well known protein, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) – responsible for removal of cholesterol from vessel walls to the liver for excretion, therefore making it an important factor in cardiovascular health.

Remember low fat diets tell your liver to produce more cholesterol, doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out where those people end up!

——Are You Toxic?——-

Sure we cannot always completely control everything that gets into our system, after all we actually absorb about 60% of what goes on our skin in any case.

So as soon as we touch anything that someone else has used we are at risk.

BUT hey we cant walk round with an iron curtain on us all day!

Here are 5 signs of a toxic liver, that are not exclusive but-

1. Bad Breath
2. Foggy Brain
3. Circles Under Eyes
4. Coated Tongue
5. Bloated

OH and one more- feeling lethargic in the morning and just cant get out of bed easily. This also has a lot to do with your adrenal glands and the relationship between cortisol and your sleep wake cycle.

—–Things To Avoid—–

Just a few as I don’t want to bombard you.

The obvious one is alcohol. It’s a no brainer, I’m not even going to go down that route!

1.Coffee

Coffee is a huge stress on the liver. It takes 28 glasses of water to alkalise the effects of coffee, which has a pH of 4.0. Acidity is a whole topic itself but those of you who have read any of my nutritional guidance will know the negative effects of the over acidic environment.

2.Drugs

Yep, they pickle your liver, even ones that are meant to make your feel better. I learnt this recently when taking malarone for malaria prevention whilst in Cambodia.

I have never felt so lethargic in my life! It sucked! The day I got off those, and back on the beetroot, carrots and tomatoes was a refreshing day.

3.Excess sugar-

Eating or drinking too much sugar will drive up the work rate of your liver as it aims to quickly change the glucose in to glycogen which is then able to be stored either in the muscle sites or in the liver, once these stores are full then its down to as fat storage.

Just 3 but I thought they might be useful. There are more stresses but we haven’t got all day.

—- Non Alcohol Related Fatty Liver Disease—-

Approximately 20% of the United States population suffers from non-alcoholic fatty liver, and the prevalence of this condition is increasing (Lazo et al , 2011),  but the current state including fatty liver disease (including non alcohol related) is worrying.

I actually witnessed this first hand with a client recently who came to me needing help. She had been told by her consultant that if she didn’t do something quickly she would be in line for a liver transplant.

Angela (not real name) was told she had non alcohol related fatty liver disease.

So she asked for my help. The biggest step , acknowledging that she needed help and seeking it. I take my hat off to her.

So we met and discussed everything and then I carried out an assessment and wrote her plan.

I left absolutely no stone unturned in this.

Here is what she said,
