STOP “WORKING OUT” ITS NOT GOOD!
It’s true.
I actually don’t think that you should be working out.
Well, not very often anyway. I love variety, that’s why none of my
TRAINING sessions or programmes are EVER the same!
WORKOUTS DEFINITELY will not get you anywhere close to where you
wanna be.
(No, I’ve not gone bananas – lemme explain . . . .)
Y’see, LOTS of people ‘workout’.
Going to a circuits class is working out. It seems to be all the
rage “HIIT” – 30 mins, 45 mins, 60 mins……..where’s the programme,
wheres the progression…..oh hang on where’s the nutrition??!!!!
Hitting Zumba is a workout (for me it’d be more of a mental battle
between brain and feet than a physical fitness thing!)
Going running when you fancy it is a workout. Going running as part
of a progressive programme…different ball game!
Or swimming, or cycling, or aqua jogging, or hitting the gym at
random with no plan that is at least 4 weeks long and has clear
progression is mad! It boils me a bit because people get
disillusioned with it! Why because its very fragile, it doesn’t
have any structure to it!
All those things are workouts. One of the reasons I ask people to
commit to a minimum of 4 weeks and that I don’t let people join in
randomly once the programme has begun……they would be wasting their
money!
Ok, so what’s the problem?
Structure.
Or rather, a lack there of.
If you’re working out like crazy, but not getting results, or maybe
you did for a bit but then they dried up (maybe you then gave up,
thinking what’s the point?), it’s not your fault.
Y’see, you were putting the work in.
Shit, some people hit it CRAZY hard in the gym or out on the road,
but for minimal return.
Thing is though, your body responds to TRAINING over time, not
random workouts.
‘Oh, I’ve heard it’s all about ‘shocking your body’.
Yeh sure that’ll work . . . for a time . . . but it’s still just
working out, randomly. You create micro damage when you train to
the muscle cells, they adapt and repair and become stronger. You
cant do this in random workouts!
Training is VERY different to just working out.
It’s structured, with purpose and direction, and if you/your coach
is switched on enough, it’s periodised to help you progress
continuously.
Your training needs to challenge and stress your body, stimulate
adaptations and growth, allow you to progress, and then the
training itself has gotta progress to ensure the cycle repeats, and
you carry on toward where you want to be.
Working out just doesn’t, and can’t give you that amigo.
So if you are currently undertaking some sort of exercise regime,
but it’s NOT getting you what you want, it really is time to think
about whether all you’re doing is working out, as opposed to
actually TRAINING.
I am just getting the final pieces together for what will be my
first trial of some cool stuff I have learnt since starting my
masters in exercise and nutrition science-
I am looking to trial it
with some lucky people who have not worked with me previously in
the NORTH CORNWALL WEIGHT LOSS TRIAL-
(sure it might not be for you…..infact it probably isn’t but tell
a friend if you like…I only called it “weight loss” because I know people
don’t get turned on by getting healthy….I just need to re educate them ;))
I’ll be covering training for success, nutrition, crushing
cravings, female hormones and fat loss/storage, mindset, and how to
‘crack the code’.
Later this week I will bring you an article on how to improve your
“training”……na that would be boring for you…..but I will bring you
something different…..keep your eyes peeled
Talk soon,
Matt
