You know I mentioned about “revving the t**s off your car” in my
email earlier this week.
I was thinking about this yesterday and got chatting with one of my
masters lecturers in the break, well earned I might add
I was discussing how we have evolved our system of training and
nutrition and lifestyle to basically allow our clients to go
through a gearing system.
——Where most people go wrong—–
They get an idea, they get inspired , which is awesome!
They dust off the gym kit and go straight to the gym for a full on
session or straight for a run.
Whats the big deal you ask?!
Well, imagine if you got in your car and without waiting for the
heater plugs to warm up, without putting fuel in it and having
enough oil it you get straight in a ram it in reverse and 5th and
leave the handbrake on and try to go flat out!
Somethings going to complain in a BIG way!
—–Gearing My Way—–
(which to be fair is working well for many clients)
So here is a 5 Geared Approach to make sure you don’t blow a “head
gasket” with your health and nutrition goals next time….
GEAR 1
Get out of reverse first by stopping sitting down all day. Get
out of your seat and move.
Sitting down is evil.
It compresses the
sacral area of your spine, that’s one of the reasons we use some
specific activation and mobility sequences with our clients.
It also pulls the pelvis into an anterior or forward tilt , which
causes digestive issues, lower back pain, weak abdominals and often
can lead to weak glutes (bum)!
Nobody wants that!
GEAR 2
Sort out your lifestyle habits. The major thing here is sleep
habits.
Its impossible for some, who work shifts I know, but if not, stop
watching TV until late.
Turn it out.
You need to start the repair
process , and if you are up late you are reducing this optimal
hormonal window.
This is why so many people are suffering from what
we know is adrenal fatigue. They never give their body chance to
switch off and repair.
They are always in FIGHT and FLIGHT mode.
We actually recommend with our clients that they use magnesium and
zinc (its all detailed in the Hot To Trot Nutritional Plan) to aid
this process.
GEAR 3
Get your nutrition in order! Stop eating sh**ty sugar laden
cereal, grow up!
Frankly, sugar in my opinion is a very nasty drug. It makes people
fat around the middle, it causes arterial damage, often cheaper
versions , namely high fructose corn syrup are used instead which
play havoc with metabolisms and the gut brain relationship.
Don’t believe me…..pringles…….chinese takeaways….what happens here….
Say no more!
Start choosing from sources that are clean, whole and naturally
sourced.
If it swam, ran, grew or flew its not a bad starting point.
Sure one persons medicine is another’s poison, but you if are in
doubt, listen to your body.
For example, I was speaking to a lady yesterday who told me she ate
bread (high sugar by the way), felt “like she was going to
explode”……….no rocket science needed here….it should not be going
into her engine!
GEAR 4
wow, you are up to fourth gear and right on track.
Now you should be trying to get in 3-5 x 30 mins of exercise. Yes
structured, planned, organised and progressive. We always follow
this sequence …we have different protocols for different clientele.
A. Mobility
B. Activation
C. Strength/Cardiovascular
D. Metabolic conditioning
E. Flexibility and Mobility
I appreciate that is not of a great deal of use to you, but I cant
write a programme here, but I want you to see that even when in
gear 4 you cant just expect to get great results by going flat out
without taking care of your mobility and movement.
GEAR 5
Wow, the holy grail of the health and fitness gearbox!
By the way I am not at all mechanically minded…hahaha….I’m actually
not!
Here is for me where you have your health in order…….. don’t kid
yourself……
This is no mean fete in contemporary living.
What with sitting down being an absolute devil causing all sorts of
problems, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, you’ve probably guessed
where I stand on cereals
A lack of attention to detail on programming and exercise
prescription is something I that I hear about and I covered earlier
in the week when I mentioned my hair salon experience!
But…..now assuming you are in 5th……you my friend can attack any
lane you like.
Enjoy your day, be your best
and remember in the words of the Edward Stanley, Earl of Derby
(1826-93)
Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner
or later have to find time for illness.
